Chapter 2: Blue Checkmark Bomb (Elise Goes Viral)
Natalie walked out of the courthouse, the weight of her divorce settlement heavy in her purse. She took a deep breath of the crisp autumn air, feeling a sense of relief and freedom. She had done it. She had survived the betrayal and the divorce, and she was ready to start anew.
But as she walked to her car, she couldn't help but notice the stares and whispers of the people around her. She had become a local celebrity of sorts, thanks to the media circus that had surrounded her divorce. Everyone seemed to know her story, and everyone had an opinion about it.
Natalie tried to ignore them, but it was hard. She felt exposed and vulnerable, like everyone was looking at her with pity or judgment. She climbed into her car and drove home, grateful for the solitude.
When she got home, she found her mailbox stuffed with letters and packages. Most of them were from strangers, offering her their condolences or their advice. Some of them were from reporters, hoping for an exclusive interview. Natalie sorted through them quickly, tossing most of them in the trash.
But one package caught her eye. It was a small box, wrapped in brown paper and tied with a string. There was no return address, but Natalie recognized the handwriting on the label. It was from Elise.
Natalie hesitated for a moment, then opened the box. Inside, she found a small blue checkmark pin. There was a note attached, written in Elise's neat handwriting.
'Congratulations on your divorce,' the note read. 'I hope you find the happiness you deserve. And just so you know, I'm not the only one who's been watching you. You have a lot of fans out there. Wear this pin with pride.'
Natalie stared at the pin, feeling a mixture of confusion and anger. What was Elise trying to do? Was this some kind of sick joke?
She tossed the pin and the note in the trash, then sat down on the couch, feeling drained. She didn't want to think about Elise or Adrian or the divorce anymore. She just wanted to forget about it all and move on.
But it wasn't that easy. The next day, Natalie woke up to find her phone buzzing with notifications. She had been tagged in a tweet by Elise, and it had gone viral.
The tweet was a photo of Natalie wearing the blue checkmark pin. 'Look who's wearing my pin!' Elise had written. 'I guess she's finally realized that she's not the only one in this world.'
The tweet had been retweeted thousands of times, and it had sparked a flurry of comments and speculation. Some people were congratulating Natalie on her divorce, while others were criticizing her for wearing the pin. Some even suggested that she was in on the affair, that she had known about it all along.
Natalie was horrified. She had no idea how Elise had gotten the photo, or why she was doing this. She quickly deleted the tweet and blocked Elise, but the damage had already been done.
The media picked up the story, and soon Natalie was being hounded by reporters again. They wanted to know why she had worn the pin, and what it meant. Natalie refused to comment, but the rumors continued to swirl.
In the days that followed, Natalie's life became a nightmare. She couldn't go anywhere without being recognized or followed. People stared at her in the grocery store, whispered about her in the coffee shop. She even received a few death threats.
Natalie was scared and alone. She didn't know who to trust or where to turn. She thought about moving away, starting a new life somewhere else. But she knew that it wouldn't be that easy. Her past would always follow her, no matter where she went.
Then, one day, she received a phone call from a woman named Julia. Julia said that she was a friend of Elise's, and that she wanted to talk to Natalie.
Natalie was skeptical at first, but Julia sounded sincere. She said that she knew what Elise was doing was wrong, and that she wanted to help Natalie.
Natalie agreed to meet Julia at a coffee shop. When she arrived, she found Julia waiting for her. Julia was a tall, slender woman with short blonde hair and a friendly smile.
'Natalie, I'm so sorry about what's happened,' Julia said. 'Elise is my friend, but I don't agree with what she's doing. I think she's just trying to hurt you, and I don't want to see that happen.'
Natalie listened as Julia explained that Elise had always been jealous of her. She had never been able to get over the fact that Adrian had chosen Natalie over her, and she had been looking for a way to get back at her ever since.
'When she found out that Adrian was cheating on you, she saw an opportunity,' Julia said. 'She thought that if she could make you look bad, then Adrian would leave you and come back to her.'
Natalie shook her head in disbelief. 'But why would she do that?' she asked. 'What does she have to gain?'
Julia sighed. 'Elise is a very complicated person,' she said. 'She's always been obsessed with Adrian, and she's convinced that he's the only one who can make her happy. She doesn't care who she hurts in the process.'
Natalie felt a wave of anger wash over her. She had been through so much, and it was all because of Elise's jealousy and selfishness.
'But why is she targeting me now?' she asked. 'Why not just leave me alone?'
Julia shrugged. 'I think she's just trying to keep the spotlight on herself,' she said. 'She knows that the media is interested in your story, and she's using it to her advantage. She wants to be the center of attention, and she doesn't care who she has to step on to get there.'
Natalie sat back in her chair, feeling defeated. She didn't know how to fight back against Elise, or how to stop the rumors and the stares. She felt like she was trapped in a never-ending nightmare.
Julia reached out and touched her hand. 'Don't give up,' she said. 'You're stronger than you think. And you have a lot of people on your side.'
Natalie looked up at her, surprised. 'You mean, there are people who actually support me?' she asked.
Julia nodded. 'Yes,' she said. 'There are a lot of people out there who think what Elise is doing is wrong. And they're willing to help you.'
Natalie felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, she could get through this after all.
'What can I do?' she asked.
Julia thought for a moment. 'First of all, you need to stop hiding,' she said. 'You need to show the world that you're not ashamed of what happened, and that you're not going to let Elise win.'
Natalie nodded. 'Okay,' she said. 'But how do I do that?'
Julia smiled. 'You start by living your life,' she said. 'You go out and do the things you love, with the people you love. You don't let Elise or anyone else stop you.'
Natalie took a deep breath. It sounded simple, but she knew it wouldn't be easy. She had spent the past few weeks hiding away, avoiding the world. But maybe Julia was right. Maybe it was time to start living again.
'And second,' Julia said, 'you need to tell your story. You need to let people know the truth about what happened, and why you made the decisions you did.'
Natalie hesitated. She wasn't sure if she was ready to share her story with the world. But she knew that Julia was right. If she wanted to put an end to the rumors and the stares, she needed to speak out.
'Okay,' she said. 'I'll do it.'
Julia smiled. 'Good,' she said. 'I'll help you. We'll find a way to get your story out there, and we'll make sure that Elise doesn't get away with what she's done.'
Natalie felt a sense of relief. She wasn't alone anymore. She had someone on her side, someone who was willing to help her fight back.
'Thank you,' she said.
Julia squeezed her hand. 'You're welcome,' she said. 'We're in this together.'
