Chapter 2: A Drawer Left Unlocked
Ethan stared out the window of the plane, his mind reeling. He couldn't believe what Clara had just told him. She was pregnant with someone else's child? How could this have happened?
The flight to Colorado seemed to take forever. Ethan tried to sleep, but his mind was too active. He kept replaying Clara's words over and over in his head. He had trusted her, and she had betrayed him.
When the plane finally landed, Ethan and Clara collected their bags and headed to the rental car counter. Ethan was silent as they drove to the lodge. He didn't know what to say or do. He just felt numb.
The lodge was beautiful, nestled in the mountains. Ethan had chosen it because he thought it would be the perfect place for them to reconnect. But now, it just felt like a reminder of everything that had gone wrong.
Clara unpacked their bags while Ethan sat on the bed, staring at the wall. He didn't know how they were going to get through this weekend. How could they pretend to be happy when everything was so broken?
Finally, Clara sat down next to him. 'Ethan, I'm sorry,' she said. 'I know this is a lot to take in. But I need you to know that I still love you.'
Ethan looked at her. He wanted to believe her, but he wasn't sure if he could. 'How can you love me when you did this?' he asked.
Clara took his hand. 'I made a mistake,' she said. 'A big one. But I don't want to lose you. I want to try to make things right.'
Ethan didn't know if he could forgive her. But he also didn't want to give up on their relationship without a fight. 'What do you want to do?' he asked.
Clara thought for a moment. 'I think we need to talk,' she said. 'Really talk. About everything that's happened and how we feel.'
Ethan nodded. He knew she was right. They needed to clear the air if they had any hope of moving forward.
So, they sat down on the couch and started to talk. Clara told him about her one-night stand with Lila's brother. She said she had been feeling lonely and disconnected from Ethan, and she had made a stupid mistake.
Ethan listened, his heart aching. He understood how she had felt, but he was still hurt by her actions. He told her how betrayed he felt, and how he wasn't sure if he could trust her again.
Clara listened, tears streaming down her face. She knew she had hurt him deeply, and she was determined to make things right. She promised to be honest with him from now on, and to do everything she could to earn his trust back.
As they talked, Ethan started to feel a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, they could find a way to move past this. Maybe they could rebuild their relationship.
But then, something happened that changed everything.
Ethan's phone rang. It was a call from his friend, Jake. Jake had some news that would change Ethan's life forever.
'Hey, Ethan,' Jake said. 'I have some bad news. Your dad had a heart attack. He's in the hospital.'
Ethan's world spun. His dad? A heart attack? How could this be happening?
He hung up the phone and looked at Clara. 'I have to go home,' he said. 'My dad's in the hospital.'
Clara's eyes widened. 'Oh my God,' she said. 'I'm so sorry. Of course you have to go.'
Ethan stood up, his mind racing. He needed to book a flight home as soon as possible. He needed to be with his dad.
Clara stood up too. 'I'll come with you,' she said.
Ethan looked at her. He was grateful for her offer, but he wasn't sure if it was a good idea. He needed to focus on his dad, and he didn't want to deal with any more drama.
'No,' he said. 'It's better if I go alone.'
Clara nodded. 'Okay,' she said. 'But I'm here for you if you need me.'
Ethan gave her a hug, then grabbed his bag and headed for the door.
As he drove to the airport, Ethan's mind was filled with worry. He prayed that his dad would be okay. He also thought about Clara, and the mess they were in. He didn't know what the future held for them, but he knew one thing for sure: he loved her, and he wasn't ready to give up on her yet.
When he arrived at the airport, Ethan booked the next flight home. He called his mom to let her know he was on his way, then sat down to wait for his boarding time.
As he waited, he thought about all the things he wanted to say to his dad. He wanted to tell him how much he loved him, and how grateful he was for everything he had done for him. He also wanted to ask him for advice, on how to handle the situation with Clara.
Finally, it was time to board the plane. Ethan took a deep breath and walked onto the plane. As he settled into his seat, he closed his eyes and tried to relax. He knew it was going to be a long flight, but he was ready to face whatever lay ahead.
The flight home was uneventful. Ethan spent most of the time sleeping, or thinking about his dad. When the plane finally landed, he grabbed his bag and headed for the exit.
His mom was waiting for him at the airport. She hugged him tightly, and he could see the worry in her eyes.
'How's Dad?' he asked.
'He's stable,' his mom said. 'But he's still in the ICU. The doctors are running some tests.'
Ethan nodded. He was relieved to hear that his dad was okay, for now at least.
'Let's go to the hospital,' he said.
His mom drove him to the hospital. When they arrived, Ethan went straight to the ICU. His dad was hooked up to machines, and he looked pale and weak.
Ethan sat down next to his dad's bed and took his hand. 'Dad,' he said. 'It's me, Ethan.'
His dad opened his eyes and looked at him. 'Hey, son,' he said, his voice weak.
Ethan felt a lump in his throat. 'How are you feeling?' he asked.
'Better,' his dad said. 'But I'm still a little groggy.'
Ethan smiled. 'That's good to hear,' he said.
They talked for a while, about nothing in particular. Ethan just wanted to be there with his dad, to let him know that he was there for him.
After a while, his dad fell asleep. Ethan sat there, watching him sleep. He thought about all the times his dad had been there for him, through thick and thin. He knew that he would do anything to make sure his dad was okay.
As he sat there, he also thought about Clara. He wondered how she was doing, and if she was thinking about him. He knew that he needed to talk to her, to tell her how he felt.
But for now, he just wanted to focus on his dad. He knew that he had a lot to deal with, but he was determined to get through it, one step at a time.
